May in Korea is a season full of warmth and vibrant festivals.

As the days grow longer and flowers bloom, Korea comes alive with vibrant festivals all around!

From beautiful spring blossoms to Korea’s traditional holidays, there’s no shortage of things to enjoy.

And don’t forget to explore the taste of Korea filled with the spirit of spring!

Let's begin😎

The spring festival You and I are both Yangban at the Korean Folk Village presents a creative reinterpretation of the class system and forged family registries from the Joseon era. Visitors can immerse themselves in the festival by taking part in interactive story-based events. In this world where family records have vanished, everyone claims to be noble — will you prove your status or forge a new one? Enjoy traditional experiences like crafting mother-of-pearl ID tags or gat(Korea traditional hat) keyrings, along with live performances and audience participation events throughout the village. You can also take photos at the beautiful flower-filled photo zones or relax at a cafe that reinterprets the traditional space of the nobility in a modern way. From April 19th, the night openings begin, offering a great opportunity to experience the subtle charm of Joseon, different from the daytime!

At the Gochang Green Barley Field Festival, you can stroll through vast fields of barley at their most beautiful, vibrant green stage. This scenic spot has been featured in many dramas and films—most famously in Goblin, where the wedding scene of Goblin and Euntak was filmed in the surrounding buckwheat fields. The iconic door used in the drama still stands between the fields, perfect for a photo opportunity. If you visit in early May, you can also enjoy the bright yellow canola flower fields nearby. These fields appeared in the drama When Life Gives You Tangerines, where the characters Gwansik and Ae-sun walked together. After exploring the fields, try some local specialties at the nearby restaurant or café—like barley bibimbap made with freshly harvested barley, or refreshing drinks made from Gochang’s black raspberries and young barley shoots!

Yuseong Spa Culture Festival, held in Daejeon’s Yuseong District, offers various programs based on the origins and benefits of the Yuseong Hot Springs, which the region is famous for. The fact that the festival is organized by the local residents adds even more significance to the event. Notable activities include the Water Gun Splash, where participants have fun shooting hot spring water at each other, and a DJ party with hot spring water. For those who want to enjoy the hot springs even more, there’s a hot spring water swimming pool, and for relaxation, an outdoor foot bath is available to relieve tired feet. If you visit on the opening day, you can enjoy various performances and the Oncheon Water Ceremony, which prays for the eternal flow of hot spring water, along with a drone show and a fireworks display. This year marks the 30th anniversary of the Yuseong Spa Culture Festival, so there will also be special themed exhibitions and photo zones to check out!

Gangneung Danoje, a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage and a festival with a long-standing tradition, celebrates its 20th anniversary this year. Dano is a Korean holiday celebrated after finishing rice planting and before the hot summer, to wish for a good harvest. The most famous custom of Dano is washing one’s hair with water boiled with changpo leaves and roots, believed to drive away evil spirits. At the Gangneung Danoje, you can experience washing your hair with changpo water! Another custom is drinking shinjoo, the liquor offered to gods, and eating surichwitteok, a wormwood rice cake shaped like a cartwheel. You can taste the shinjoo and surichwitteok made from rice collected by the citizens of Gangneung. In addition, there are traditional events such as folk games where you can actively participate. The interpretation program, which provides explanations in Korean, English, Japanese, and Chinese, is accepting applications until May 18th, so take this opportunity to learn more about Dano and the Danoje Festival!
