At the Gwangju Kimchi Festival, you can enjoy a wide range of programs that celebrate kimchi, a traditional Korean dish. Gwangju, known as the city of flavour where mountains, fields, and the sea come together, offers kimchi made with the rich local produce of the Jeolla region — spicy yet deeply savoury in its own distinctive way. Gwangju-style kimchi follows a special recipe using generous amounts of vegetables, salted seafood, glutinous rice paste, and sesame seeds. Now in its 32nd year, the festival invites you to discover, taste, and even make Gwangju kimchi for yourself!

Explore a variety of kimchi dishes, pop-up restaurants featuring foods that pair perfectly with kimchi, and the Kimchi Convenience Store,” where over 20 types of kimchi are gathered in one place so you can purchase small portions that suit your taste. Don’t miss the live kimchi cooking shows led by renowned chefs — including those featured on the program “Culinary Class Wars” and award-winning kimchi masters — where you can watch, learn, and taste the flavours right on the spot.

The Bangeo Festival is a vibrant celebration held at Moseulpo Port, where you can fully experience the lively atmosphere of the harbour while enjoying fresh, seasonal bangeo (yellowtail). Loved by Koreans as a winter delicacy, bangeo is known for its chewy texture and rich, oily flavour. Especially prized are those caught in the rough waters near Gapado and Marado, off the coast of Jeju, which are said to have firmer flesh and higher fat content, making them exceptionally tasty. At the festival, visitors can enjoy free tastings of fresh sashimi and local seafood, as well as a variety of bangeo dishes.

You can even catch one yourself through hands-on programs like bare-hand bangeo catching or fishing experiences. There are also special activities related to Jeju’s iconic haenyeo (female divers), offering a vivid encounter with the island’s blue sea and maritime culture. Don’t miss this festive event where you can savour the taste of winter and the freshness of Jeju’s bangeo to the fullest!
