Buddhism in Korea goes beyond religion and has been part of the nation’s tradition for over a thousand years.

Accordingly, you can find temples harmoniously set within a wide range of natural landscapes.

Even without being a believer, many people visit temples to rest their minds amid these beautiful surroundings.

We introduce Korea’s temples that embody architectural beauty, tranquil scenery, and stories shaped by centuries of history!

Let's begin😎

Sudeoksa Temple is a historic temple with a 1,500-year history, where visitors can enjoy beautiful scenery alongside cultural heritage and works of art. Its Daeungjeon Hall, built in 1308, is the oldest surviving wooden building in Korea with a clearly documented construction date. The temple’s architecture is characterized by well-balanced layouts and restrained structures without elaborate decoration, creating a tranquil atmosphere that naturally brings a sense of calm.
Recently, a museum and art gallery with a unique structure that harmoniously blends traditional hanok architecture with modern exhibition spaces have been added, offering even more to see. Explore Sudeoksa’s collection of Buddhist artifacts and treasures, as well as artworks that bridge tradition and contemporary art. At the entrance to the temple, sanchae bibimbap is especially popular, offering a healthy and flavorful meal, and nearby Deoksan Hot Springs are well known, making it a perfect place to enjoy a light foot bath and take time to heal both body and mind.

Cheoneunsa Temple is one of the three major temples of Jirisan Mountain, surrounded by towering peaks and clear streams flowing through the mountain’s deep valleys. Even before fully entering the temple grounds, visitors encounter impressive sights from Iljumun Gate to Cheonwangmun Gate at the top of the stairs. In particular, Suhongnu Pavilion, the bridge crossed on the way into the temple, is known as a filming location for Mr. Sunshine. This is where Aesin and Heesung shared their final farewell, and the arched bridge over the reservoir combined with the elegant pavilion creates a scene that feels like a watercolor painting.
Crossing the bridge yourself is rewarding, but viewing Suhongnu from the opposite side offers an even more beautiful perspective. Nearby, the 3.3 km circular trail called Sangsaengui Gil consists of three routes and provides a healing walk where nature and people coexist in harmony.

Jeondeungsa Temple is the oldest surviving Buddhist temple in Korea, and its long history is deeply intertwined with the history of the nation itself. While many people visit for healing and quiet reflection, the temple is also historically significant, housing important Korean treasures such as Daeungjeon Hall and the temple bell, as well as the Jeongjok Sago, which once stored the Annals of the Joseon Dynasty. The surrounding natural scenery changes beautifully with each season, and visitors can also encounter a ginkgo tree that is over 700 years old.
In addition, an event is scheduled in which visitors can write down their wishes and hang them on a wish tree; on Jeongwol Daeboreum, March 3, these papers are burned as prayers for those wishes to come true. One of the most unique features of this temple is that it is a place where you can relax together with your pet dog. By carefully reviewing the guidelines and completing a pet companion consent form, you can enjoy walking through many of the outdoor areas with your dog.
